Since its founding in March 2023, the Brazilian Institute for Responsible Gaming (IBJR) has established itself as one of the most important voices in strengthening the betting sector in Brazil and around the world. Formed by the leading regulated operators active in the country — all with national and international reputations and proven compliance records in mature markets — the IBJR works to build a sustainable, ethical, and responsible betting ecosystem.

Since its inception, the Institute has engaged with authorities, civil society, and the press to foster public debate on effective regulatory pathways. IBJR’s focus rests on two essential pillars: the fight against the illegal market and the promotion of responsible gaming.

With the entry into force of federal regulation in January 2025, the Institute has further reinforced its role as an active player in consolidating a trustworthy market, where betting takes place exclusively on platforms authorized and supervised by the Secretariat for Prizes and Betting (SPA), ensuring player protection and preventing fraud.

In addition to raising awareness about the size and dangers of the illegal market — one of the sector’s biggest challenges — the IBJR promotes ongoing initiatives in financial awareness and best practices to ensure that betting happens in a balanced, safe, and responsible way. “Brazil has taken a decisive step with regulation. Now, the challenge is to promote the consolidation of the regulated market and combat illegal betting operators, which cause harm to bettors, society, and the long-term sustainability of the sector,” says Fernando Vieira, Executive President of IBJR.
