Bets in Brazil Adopt Technology That Detected Suspicious Activity in the Paquetá Case

Companies affiliated with the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming use artificial intelligence and data cross-checking to identify and block result manipulations

The Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI) on Betting has once again highlighted illegal activities aimed at financial gain through the manipulation of sports results. This practice is strongly combated by the betting companies associated with the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming (IBJR), which represent 75% of the legal betting market in Brazil. These companies are multinational operators with experience in mature markets that have strict regulations, such as the UK, Italy, and Spain. The technological solutions and expertise they apply internationally are also implemented in Brazil.

“Game integrity is fundamental and non-negotiable. The largest betting operators in Brazil actively identify potential frauds to prevent such illegal and unethical behavior, in line with their global practices. We advocate and work for fair play and healthy entertainment,” says André Gelfi, CEO of IBJR.

Financial and betting transactions are closely monitored, with irregularities triggering alerts for further investigation. For example, in the case involving player Paquetá, large bets placed on a lesser-known operator in Rio de Janeiro raised a red flag. The betting operator itself initiated an investigation and reported the matter to the English Football Association and other relevant authorities.

The same technology is used by IBJR affiliates. By tracking user IP addresses, alongside financial transactions, they continuously analyze discrepancies in registration data, payment volumes and methods, bet locations, device types, player habits, and financial capacity.

Thousands of daily bets undergo AI-driven screenings that detect unusual patterns potentially indicative of manipulation. In these situations, alerts are generated to prompt deeper investigations and notify authorities and sports governing bodies.

“Our systems, continuously improved and fully aligned with international regulations, are the primary tools to protect bettors and prevent fraud, which is completely opposed to the fair and responsible gaming we stand for,” explains Gelfi.

Regulation of betting operators in Brazil is also advancing in this area. Current rules require companies to be part of, or affiliate with, national or international organizations that monitor sports integrity. IBJR members comply with these regulations and are part of the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA), the leading global entity fighting corruption in betting and safeguarding sports integrity.

Founded in 2005, IBIA has been involved in numerous high-profile international cases and promotes best practices and guidelines to ensure betting integrity worldwide. It monitors betting activities and cross-checks bets across various markets with broader scope than most other integrity and monitoring firms.
