Technology is the Main Ally of Betting Operators in the Fight Against Result Manipulation

Companies affiliated with the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming use artificial intelligence and data cross-checking to detect and block suspicious activities

Gaming is entertainment and must be fair and transparent. This is the stance of the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming (IBJR), whose affiliates hold 75% of Brazil’s betting market. This principle translates into practical actions to prevent illegal activities like result manipulation—a fight in which technology is the key ally of betting operators both in Brazil and worldwide.

“Game integrity is fundamental and non-negotiable. The largest betting companies in Brazil actively work to identify potential fraud, preventing illegal and unethical practices, in line with their global standards. We stand for fair play and healthy entertainment,” says André Gelfi, CEO of IBJR.

IBJR’s affiliated betting companies also operate in mature foreign markets with strict regulations, such as the UK, Italy, and Spain. All their experience and technological solutions used abroad are applied here in Brazil as well.

Financial transactions and betting activities are continuously monitored, with inconsistencies triggering alerts for deeper analysis. Besides financial data, inconsistencies in user registration details, betting volumes and payment methods, bet locations, device types, player habits, and financial capacity are constantly assessed.

Every daily bet passes through AI-powered screenings designed to detect suspicious activity potentially indicative of manipulation. Examples include large concentrations of bets on specific moments in a single match, individuals placing atypical bets simultaneously across multiple platforms, and sudden creation of profiles making large transactions.

In these cases, alerts prompt further investigation and notification of authorities and sports organizations. “Supervisory institutions dedicated to protecting sports integrity are essential in this process. That’s why IBJR affiliates are members of the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA), the leading global body fighting for betting integrity and protecting sports fairness,” explains Gelfi.

Integrity organizations work by receiving suspicious case reports from operators who share data with them. Then, detailed investigations and data analyses follow. When there is strong evidence of fraud, the case is reported to the relevant sports authority, which involves the competent enforcement bodies. In Brazil, the IBJR’s role is to encourage and provide knowledge so operators can improve their detection and prevention efforts.

Regulation of betting operators in Brazil is crucial in combating result manipulation. The rules require betting companies to join or associate with national or international sports integrity monitoring organizations like IBIA. A significant step was taken in late October, when the Ministry of Finance partnered with international integrity bodies. This means Brazil’s Secretariat for Prizes and Betting will have new monitoring and intelligence tools to identify suspicious activities.

“Regulation brings important requirements focusing on transparency and fairness in betting. That’s why it is vital to fight illegal operators who don’t comply with strict oversight and fraud prevention standards. Illegal practices have no place in the fair and responsible gaming environment we promote,” Gelfi concludes.
