Case of the “Little Airplane” Reinforces the Importance of Supplier Exclusivity in Brazil’s Regulated Betting Market
The Brazilian Institute for Responsible Gaming (IBJR), which brings together the leading sports betting companies in Brazil and worldwide, believes that the recent decision by the UK Gambling Commission to suspend the license of game provider Spribe, creator of the popular game known as “Aviator”, underscores the urgency for Brazil to also regulate online gaming and technology providers within the country’s legal betting framework.
The case highlights an essential principle for the integrity of the sector: an authorized supplier must operate exclusively in the regulated market, offering its products and services only to licensed operators subject to government oversight. This rule ensures that the technology used in betting, from game algorithms to payment systems, complies with standards of security, transparency, and social responsibility.
By including supplier regulation in its agenda, Brazil’s Secretariat of Prizes and Betting is taking a decisive step toward consolidating a competitive and trustworthy environment. However, it is crucial that the Brazilian model follows the standards of more mature jurisdictions, establishing control mechanisms that prevent licensed providers from simultaneously operating in the illegal market, under penalty of losing their authorization.
The IBJR maintains that this exclusivity is essential to protect bettors, ensure a level playing field for companies operating within the law, and weaken the illegal market, which relies on technologies offering no guarantee of integrity or fair returns to players.
With comprehensive regulation, from operators to developers, Brazil will be able to strengthen the sector’s credibility, attract investment, and build a truly responsible and sustainable betting ecosystem.
